Podiatric Residency

A Warm Welcome

Greetings, from our Directors!

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR-RRA) at Saint Vincent Hospital. Our program has been in existence for over 40 years and is well supported by our hospital administration. We have an extremely busy emergency department which provides excellent exposure and volume for trauma surgery. In addition, we have strong affiliations with the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, two very active surgical centers, several private practices, and large medical groups in the area.

We have a large and diverse group of dedicated faculty with over 25 skilled Attendings ranging from seasoned practitioners to newly trained recent graduates of residency programs providing a diverse and expansive learning opportunity for our residents. Our core faculty are dedicated to teaching with weekly scheduled academic meetings including case presentations, radiology rounds, board review, Journal clubs, lectures, chapter reviews, and hands-on workshops and cadaver labs. All our Attendings strive to create a challenging but comfortable learning environment which we believe allows our residents to develop and master their skills and talents to the best of their abilities producing not only talented surgeons and practitioners, but compassionate physicians who are prepared to excel upon graduation.

We believe that this is one of the most well-rounded training programs in the country providing our residents with a high volume of all aspects of foot ankle surgery ranging from forefoot to reconstructive rear-foot and ankle surgery, arthroscopy, and trauma surgery. In addition, we have a busy Wound Center providing hands on state-of-the-art wound care including HBO therapy, and limb salvage.

In addition, during the second and third year, our residents begin office rotations gaining valuable clinical experience and practice management skills. This allows them to follow their surgical cases closely and refine their diagnostic abilities under the tutelage of our core faculty in various office settings.

We would like to thank you for your interest in our program and we hope you will consider the excellent opportunities our program offers. We wish you all the success in our search for a residency program.

Sincerely,

Paul A. Cournoyer, DPM, FACFAS

Our Comprehensive Program

Our podiatric residency is a 3-year comprehensive forefoot and rearfoot surgical and medical program with 2 residents each year. Residents are exposed to a wide range of surgical techniques and clinical presentations for varying pathologies of the foot and ankle.

Residents work closely with over 20 podiatric surgeons as well as foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons who typically offer over 30 cases per week. The residents operate at different surgical sites located within 3 miles of Saint Vincent Hospital, including 3 UMass Memorial Medical Center sites, the Shrewsbury Surgical Center, and Worcester Surgical Center. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, UMass Memorial Medical Center leads to large numbers of reconstructive and trauma cases. As a resident, you begin operating right away and do not “double scrub” cases.

Residents are able to rotate through a podiatric clinic in their second and third year, allowing them to have direct and hands-on patient care with exposure to billing, pathology workups, and experience with post-operative care. Residents also have ample experience in wound care and HBO therapy with a busy and highly ranked wound care center.
