Mission Statement

Mission of the Program

  • To provide well-balanced instruction through scheduled didactics and individualized mentoring to give residents a firm foundation in the practice of clinical medicine.
  • To ensure that residents rotate through an array of inpatient and ambulatory settings both in general medicine and specialties. Under the committed mentoring of seasoned clinicians, residents will develop clinical and communication skills as well as professionalism.
  • To challenge and prepare residents for their future careers as clinicians, teachers and mentors to future generations of physicians and healthcare workers.
  • To develop skills to step into roles as leaders in the community.
  • To achieve a work-life balance so that they continue to experience the joy of medicine well beyond their years of training.

Aims of the Program:

  • Learn to diagnose, manage, and follow up patients with complex medical problems. Develop the problem-solving skills necessary to evaluate and manage patients with a variety of medical problems, including mental health and physical health issues.
  • Understand the importance of health care cost burden involved in every day patient care.
  • Learn the importance of preventive care, including appropriate screening tests and interventions.
  • Learn to emphasize a scholastic approach to medicine and acquire skills in performance improvement.
  • Develop approaches to patient satisfaction, including effective listening, communication, and clear explanations of diagnostic and management plans.
  • Be required to treat each patient with respect and empathy, always with the understanding that patients can exercise their cultural, spiritual and personal beliefs within legal limits.
  • Be required to acquire skills to interact in a professional manner with their colleagues across multidisciplinary teams. A major emphasis is on effective communication, feedback and respect to others is given.
  • Learn time and resource management.
